The Ensorcellement in Wakefield

This past Saturday I had the chance to attend The Ensorcellement of the Luminary Sepulchre, an unofficial narrative Necropolis 28 event in Wakefield, MA. The event was organized by Mortcullis and Bitzbibsorks, and was a real blast.

I’ve been wanting to try Necropolis 28 for a long time now, so having a deadline to finish a gathering and a board of my own was a happy motivator. Little events like this are great because you get a chance to actually talk to everyone and get excited about their art.

The Board

I built my board the weekend before the event, and did almost all of the painting on it in one night. I started by madly gluing down halloween decorations before refining with insulation foam, cork, and balsa/basswood. The brass channeling bowls were added very late in the process, but I think they were just the focal point the board needed.

The Gathering

The Underlith itself is completely handmade. Originally I wanted to make something more inspired by the Demonolith from Final Fantasy X. I made a quick prototype with some foam and a plastic dinosaur skull I had, but I didn’t end up liking the result. I decided that the visual interest of the obelisk would come from inset stone panels covered in glyphs, as well as the paintjob itself later on.

Once I had an imposing rock I was happy with, it was quick work to make a smaller shard as a familiar. With the demonic rocks and a few husks kitbashed from Reaper and D&D miniatures the gathering was complete. The crest on Greth the Axe comes from a resin Sun Rot miniature from Matt Ross.

I’ve had this idea for a while for making blood tokens. It’s been fully formed in my mind for long enough that I can’t help but wonder if I stole it from someone! Each token is simply a paperclip bent into a vaguely goetic looking form with a skull on the end. These were textured with some UV resin to add liquid drops and drips before paint.

The night before my deadline I stayed up til 2am painting my entire gathering, two extra NPC miniatures, and a set of loot tokens. You can see all of these paintjobs in my newly minted 2026 Miniature Gallery.

The Ensorcellement

The event was held in a public library. Jesse and Brad created a packet with three custom scenarios, as well as prose to link them together that Jesse read aloud between rounds. We had around a dozen players in all, most of whom I had met briefly before. As Gage aptly put it, ‘it’s all really just an excuse to hang out with your friends’.

The games had our gatherings descending into fractured pocket dimensions deep beneath the dead world. We hunted for scraps of arcane wisdom before finally tracking down and defeating the undead mage whose influence had pulled us there.

All of the games were a blast, and my opponents leaned heavily into narrative and fun over rules lawyering. As usual at this sort of thing, many stickers were distributed. The party moved to The Hobby Bunker and then the legendary Kowloon chinese restaurant before calling it a night.

I’ve assembled a gallery here of the photos several people took from the event. These are variously from Tyler, Jesse, Ian, and myself. If you have more photos you’d like included (or any you’d like taken down!) feel free to let me know.

Many thanks as well to Hugo for taking all of the following photos:

Thanks to Brad and Jesse for their hard work preparing and running the event for us, my opponents, and everyone else who showed up for a sweet day with sweet people who paint little toys.

  1. The map and figures look incredible — especially like the glowing red energy arcs supporting the obelisk/familiar. I was bummed to be out of town that weekend since Wakefield is an easy drive for me and Necropolis28 seems really fun. Looks like a great time, very much hoping they do another.
